Peter Matiway & Trin - 2003 Novice Novice Champions

How Trin came into my life is really a bit of a blur.  I had been comfortably on
the sidelines of the dog world while my better half, Diane, and her two dobes,
participated in obedience, agility and most recently, flyball.  I was adamant
that there were to be no more dogs. How quickly things changed.

One night, after watching an episode of Dogs With Jobs, featuring a BC named “Rope” from Alberta, I showed a slight interest in herding.  The next thing I knew we were over at the Younger’s looking at Mica’s litter of nine pups (sired by Joyce Geier’s Tait). It was an evenly mixed bunch of boys and girls, rough and smooth, black & whites and tris.

With two male dobes, we were leaning towards a female, but that still left a few choices.   Trin’s non-traditional appearance and friendly but calm manner caught my attention.   Although we had 7th pick, her tri-coloured, smooth coat worked in our favour and we got the pup we wanted.

Like her mother, Trin is multi-talented, excelling at both obedience and flyball and she shows a natural affinity for agility as well.  Herding lessons started with Viki Kidd at Heritage Park that winter.  After only five months of training, we made a memorable debut there in June 2002 by placing first at our first trial.  The rest of that season proved to be a bit of a roller coaster ride.  We had our share of difficulties, truly being a novice-novice team but still managed some respectable placements and ended the season tied for 4th with brother Clay.

We came prepared for a full season in 2003.  With a little more experience and confidence    and a much more relaxed manner on my part, we managed consistent placements throughout the year.

Although Trin may not have the strongest presence, she is very biddable, works hard, and learns fast.  Mindful of her sheep, and quick to understand the job at hand, Trin would be a  great little farm dog.  Until then, we’re looking forward to the challenges ahead in Pro-Novice.
